Bastion remnants in numbers

Measured with our engine on 10 test seeds, Java 1.21.1, in an area of 8,192 × 8,192 blocks around 0, 0 for each seed.

What is a bastion remnant?

A bastion remnant is a large, castle-like ruin in the Nether guarded by piglins. Players raid it for gold, netherite and the netherite upgrade template. 6 things to look for inside:

Watch out: Piglins, piglin brutes and hoglins, a magma cube spawner in the treasure room, a lot of lava, and ghasts.

Where bastion remnants generate

Bastions generate in the Nether wastes, soul sand valleys, crimson forests and warped forests. They don’t generate in basalt deltas: a Nether fortress generates there instead. Over the lava sea they float with no pillars.

This is how the bastion remnants in our test areas split between biomes:

BiomeShare of bastion remnants
Nether wastes43.4%
Crimson forest27.1%
Soul sand valley18.9%
Warped forest8.4%
Other biomes at the sampled point2.2%

How far apart bastion remnants are

The game splits the Nether into square regions of 27 × 27 chunks (432 × 432 blocks) and makes one attempt in each. Our test areas held about 360 regions each and between 169 and 198 bastion remnants, so about 49% of regions got one.

The median is a typical seed. Yours can be much closer or further, which is why the finder lists results for your exact seed.

Tips for finding and exploring bastion remnants

How to use the coordinates in game

  1. Press F3 to see your own X and Z in the Nether, then head towards the result’s X and Z. Bastion remnants are in the Nether, from the lava sea up.
  2. With cheats on, tap a marker or Copy and run /tp @s X ~ Z; the ~ keeps your current height.
  3. The coordinates are the north-west corner of the chunk the bastion remnant starts in, the same chunk /locate structure minecraft:bastion_remnant points to.

Set “Search near” to your base or the map centre to list bastion remnants around a different spot. To see bastion remnants next to every other structure type, use the structure finder.

How accurate the bastion remnant finder is

We started a real Java 1.21.1 server for 10 test seeds. Our nearest bastion remnant to 0, 0 matched the game’s /locate on 10 of 10 seeds, and the game confirmed 50 of the 50 bastion remnants we listed. Other versions haven’t been checked against the game yet.

Bedrock Edition: Java only for now

On Bedrock, Nether structure regions are larger (480 × 480 blocks instead of 432 × 432) and a bastion has a 2/3 chance to generate instead of a fortress (3/5 on Java). A Java map would point you to the wrong places, so the finder doesn’t show Bedrock results yet.
