Igloos in numbers

Measured with our engine on 10 test seeds, Java 1.21.1, in an area of 8,192 × 8,192 blocks around 0, 0 for each seed.

What is an igloo?

An igloo is a small snow-block house in snowy biomes. Some igloos have a hidden basement with a golden apple and everything you need to cure a zombie villager. 4 things to look for inside:

Watch out: Some stone bricks in the basement and ladder shaft are infested, so silverfish can come out when you break them.

Where igloos generate

Igloos generate in snowy taiga and snowy plains, and rarely in snowy slopes. The igloo sits on the surface; the basement, when there is one, is underground at the bottom of a long ladder.

This is how the igloos in our test areas split between biomes:

BiomeShare of igloos
Snowy taiga47.9%
Snowy plains46.8%
Snowy slopes5.3%

Measured with our engine on 10 test seeds, Java 1.21.1, in an area of 8,192 × 8,192 blocks around 0, 0 for each seed. Biome taken at the centre of each start chunk, at Y 64.

How far apart igloos are

The game splits the Overworld into square regions of 32 × 32 chunks (512 × 512 blocks) and makes one attempt in each. Our test areas held about 256 regions each and between 0 and 35 igloos, so about 2% of regions got one.

The median is a typical seed. Yours can be much closer or further, which is why the finder lists results for your exact seed.

Tips for finding and exploring igloos

How to use the coordinates in game

  1. Press F3 to see your own X and Z, then head towards the result’s X and Z. Igloos are on the surface.
  2. With cheats on, tap a marker or Copy and run /tp @s X ~ Z; the ~ keeps your current height.
  3. The coordinates are the north-west corner of the chunk the igloo starts in, the same chunk /locate structure minecraft:igloo points to.

Set “Search near” to your base or the map centre to list igloos around a different spot. To see igloos next to every other structure type, use the structure finder.

How accurate the igloo finder is

We started a real Java 1.21.1 server for 10 test seeds. Our nearest igloo to 0, 0 matched the game’s /locate on 10 of 10 seeds, and the game confirmed 22 of the 22 igloos we listed. Other versions haven’t been checked against the game yet.

Bedrock Edition: Java only for now

On Bedrock, the basement villager is a snowy villager with a random job, the windows are packed ice, and an igloo with a basement counts as a village, so raids can happen there. A Java map would point you to the wrong places, so the finder doesn’t show Bedrock results yet.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find an igloo in Minecraft?

Enter your world seed above, pick the Java version the world was created in, and the finder lists the nearest igloos with exact X and Z coordinates. Half of all igloos have a basement. The trapdoor is under the carpet in front of the doorway.

What Y-level are igloos at?

Igloos are on the surface.

How far away is the nearest igloo?

On our 10 test seeds the nearest igloo to 0, 0 was 1,887 blocks away for a typical seed, ranging from 884 to 4,387 blocks. Your seed can be closer or further, so check the list for your own world.

Does the igloo finder work on Bedrock Edition?

Not yet. On Bedrock, the basement villager is a snowy villager with a random job, the windows are packed ice, and an igloo with a basement counts as a village, so raids can happen there. The finder only shows Java results, so it never points you to the wrong place.

How accurate is the igloo finder?

We checked it against a real Java 1.21.1 server: the game confirmed 22 of the 22 igloos we listed, and our nearest result matched /locate on 10 of 10 seeds.

How do I find my Minecraft seed?

In Java Edition, type /seed in chat. It works in single player even with cheats off; on a server you need operator rights. Text seeds work too: paste them as they are.
