Minecraft diamond finder

Where diamonds really are in Java 1.21. We generated 2,560 chunks on the official server and counted every diamond block, so this page shows what you’ll actually find, after caves and bedrock. Exact diamond positions for your own seed are the next tool we’re building.

Diamonds in numbers

Counted in 2,560 chunks generated by the official Java 1.21.1 server: 256 chunks around 0, 0 in each of 10 test seeds.

Diamonds by Y-level

Each bar is the number of diamond blocks we found on that Y-level. Diamonds generate from Y -64 up to Y 16, and the count rises the deeper you go, down to Y -57, then falls towards the bottom of the world. Part of that drop is bedrock, which fills part of Y -64 to Y -60 and leaves less deepslate for ore to replace. The layers just above the bedrock have slightly fewer diamonds too, which the placement rules alone don’t explain; caves and lava near the bottom are a likely reason, but we haven’t measured them.

Best Y-level for diamonds

In our count the best layer was Y -57, with 6.1 diamond blocks per 10 chunks on that one layer. The common advice, Y -59, is close: it had 5.5 per 10 chunks, and it’s the lowest layer without any bedrock, so tunnels there are easy to dig. Anything from Y -59 to about Y -53 is a good place to strip mine.

There’s a clear step at Y -4. Above it, diamonds drop to about 18% as many per layer as just below it, because one of the four ways diamonds generate (medium veins, below) only reaches up to Y -4. Mining above Y -4 for diamonds is a poor trade. At the best layer there are about 2.4 diamond blocks for every 1,000 blocks of stone and deepslate.

How diamonds generate in 1.18 and later

Since 1.18 the game places diamonds with four separate rules, applied to every chunk. Each rule picks spots in the chunk, then grows a small vein of ore at each spot, but only into stone or deepslate. Some of the ore that would touch air, such as a cave wall, is thrown away; that is why caves have fewer visible diamonds than solid rock.

Buried veins only survive where no block of the vein touches air, so they are always hidden inside solid rock. You find them by mining through stone, not by exploring caves. The other three rules leave some diamonds on cave walls, which is why caves deep underground are still worth a look.

How much it varies between worlds

The rules are the same in every world, but caves, aquifers and terrain differ, so the number of diamonds you can actually mine varies too. Across our 10 seeds, the average went from 20.5 to 24.8 diamond blocks per chunk. A world with big caves near the bottom has fewer diamonds left in solid rock, but more of them are exposed on cave walls.

Why there’s no exact diamond finder for your seed yet

Structures and biomes can be worked out from the seed alone, which is what the rest of this site does. Diamonds can’t: whether a diamond survives depends on whether a cave, aquifer or other block is next to it, and that needs the real terrain for your seed. Tools that show diamond coordinates without generating the terrain show where the game tries to place veins, and some of those diamonds won’t be there. We’re building an exact diamond finder that generates the real chunks for your seed and lists only diamonds that exist, starting with Java 1.21.

How to mine for diamonds

  1. Dig down to Y -57, or Y -59 if you want a floor with no bedrock. Press F3 to see your Y.
  2. Strip mine: dig a long 1 × 2 tunnel, with side tunnels a few blocks apart, so you see a lot of stone for little digging.
  3. Bring a water bucket: lava is common near the bottom of the world, and water turns it into obsidian or stone.
  4. Use an iron pickaxe or better. Diamond ore mined with anything weaker drops nothing.
  5. Explore any big cave you break into: some diamonds generate on cave walls.

Java and Bedrock

These counts are for Java Edition 1.21.1. We haven’t measured Bedrock Edition, so we don’t claim the same numbers for it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Y-level for diamonds?

Y -57 had the most diamond blocks in our count of 2,560 real chunks. Y -59 is almost as good and has no bedrock.

How many diamonds are in a chunk?

About 23.6 diamond blocks per chunk on average in Java 1.21.1, between 20.5 and 24.8 depending on the world.

Can a diamond finder show the exact diamonds for my seed?

Only by generating the real terrain for your seed, because caves remove some of the ore. We’re building a finder that does that. Until then this page shows where diamonds are most likely.

Do diamonds generate above Y 16?

No. All four diamond rules place ore between Y -64 and Y 16, and we found none above Y 16.

Why are there fewer diamonds at Y -64?

Bedrock fills part of the bottom five layers, so there is less stone and deepslate there for diamond ore to replace.

Are there more diamonds in some biomes?

No. The diamond rules are the same in every Overworld biome. The ore finder lists the ores that do depend on the biome, such as emerald and badlands gold.

If you’d rather loot than mine, these structures can have diamonds in their chests. Their finders give exact coordinates for your seed today.
