Lush caves in numbers

Where lush caves generate

Lush caves are an underground biome that generates naturally since Java 1.18. They follow humidity, so they're common under humid biomes. In our 10 test seeds, the biome above lush caves (measured at Y 64) was most often bamboo jungle (18%), dark forest (13%), desert (8%) and old growth spruce taiga (7%). Deserts and oceans can have lush caves under them too.

Best Y-level for lush caves

Lush caves are most common between Y -16 and Y 0, and uncommon above Y 48. This is how much of the area is lush caves at each height, across our 10 test seeds:

Measured with our engine on 10 test seeds, Java 1.21.1, in an area of 8,192 × 8,192 blocks around 0, 0 for each seed. Share of the area that is each cave biome at that height.

The finder searches at Y 0 by default. Change the Y-level to search higher or lower; the map and the list update.

Signs on the surface

Azalea trees grow on the surface above lush caves, with rooted dirt reaching down towards the cave. Inside you'll find moss, glow berries hanging from cave vines, spore blossoms and big dripleaf.

How to use the coordinates in game

  1. Press F3 to see your X, Y and Z, then go to the result's X and Z and dig down to its Y.
  2. With cheats on, run /tp @s X ~ Z to reach the spot on the surface first: teleporting straight to the Y-level can put you inside solid rock.
  3. The biome covers solid rock as well as open cave, so the exact block may be stone. The plants grow on the cave surfaces around it.

For our 10 test seeds on Java 1.21.1, the nearest lush caves at Y 0 were between 0 and 997 blocks from 0, 0, about 380 blocks in a typical seed.

How accurate the lush cave finder is

We started a real Java 1.21.1 server for 10 seeds. All 50 lush cave results we listed were lush caves in the game (/locate biome minecraft:lush_caves from each result returned that same block), and all 30 places the game found from our test points were lush caves on our map. Other versions haven't been checked against the game yet.

Bedrock Edition: Java only for now

Bedrock generates biomes differently, so a Java map would point to the wrong places. The finder doesn't show Bedrock results yet.
