The Nether in numbers

Measured with our engine on 10 test seeds, Java 1.21.1, in an area of 8,192 × 8,192 blocks around 0, 0 for each seed.

What the Nether map shows

The map opens in the Nether with fortresses, bastion remnants and Nether ruined portals switched on, drawn over the five Nether biomes. Tap a marker for its exact X and Z, the biome and a Copy /tp button. Use the Structures panel to hide any type, or switch Dimension to the Overworld or the End to see the rest of your world. The coordinates are Nether coordinates, the ones the F3 screen shows while you are in the Nether.

Nether structures

Fortresses and bastions share one grid: the Nether is split into regions of 27 × 27 chunks, and each region holds one or the other, never both. Ruined portals use their own grid, so they can appear next to either. This is how often each one turned up in our test areas:

Bastion remnant2.724550/50
Ruined portal (Nether)2.428650/50

Measured with our engine on 10 test seeds, Java 1.21.1, in an area of 8,192 × 8,192 blocks around 0, 0 for each seed. “Confirmed by the game”: listed results that /locate found on a real Java 1.21.1 server.

Nether biomes

The Nether has five biomes. Where fortresses and bastions end up depends on them: bastions never generate in basalt deltas, so the game places a fortress there instead, which makes basalt deltas the best place to look for blaze rods.

Want one Nether biome only, such as soul sand valley or warped forest? Use the biome finder with Dimension set to Nether.

Nether and Overworld coordinates

One block in the Nether equals 8 blocks in the Overworld, on X and Z. Y doesn’t scale. Multiply a Nether position by 8 to find where to build the matching portal in the Overworld, and divide by 8 to go the other way.

Nether X, ZOverworld X, ZUse

How to use the Nether map

  1. Type /seed in game and paste the seed above, then pick the version the world was created in.
  2. Tap a fortress or bastion to see its Nether X and Z, and copy the /tp command if cheats are on.
  3. Set “Search near” to your Nether portal’s coordinates to list the structures closest to it.
  4. To plan from the Overworld, multiply the X and Z of the result by 8 and build a portal there.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a seed map for the Nether?

Yes. This page is the seed map set to the Nether: it shows the five Nether biomes with every fortress, bastion remnant and ruined portal for your seed.

How do I find a Nether fortress on the map?

Fortresses have a dark red brick icon. On our test seeds the nearest one was about 289 Nether blocks from 0, 0. The Nether fortress finder lists the 10 nearest.

Why is there a bastion where I expected a fortress?

Each 27 × 27 chunk region of the Nether gets either a fortress or a bastion. Outside basalt deltas, bastions are the more common choice.

Does the Nether map work on Bedrock?

Not yet. Bedrock uses larger Nether regions and different odds, so the map only shows Java results.

Are the coordinates Nether or Overworld coordinates?

Nether coordinates. Multiply X and Z by 8 for the Overworld.
