Structures and search area
Bedrock Edition isn't supported yet
Bedrock places structures and slime chunks differently from Java, so we don't show Java results for a Bedrock world. Bedrock support is coming. Switch to Java to use the map.

What is a ruined portal?
A ruined portal is a broken Nether portal frame with a loot chest beside it. Players look for one to get obsidian for a portal and gold gear. 5 things to look for inside:
- Obsidian, with some crying obsidian mixed in
- Blocks of gold
- A loot chest with golden armor and tools
- Flint and steel, fire charges and obsidian
- Golden apples and, rarely, an enchanted golden apple
Watch out: Lava and magma blocks are part of the structure. The Nether version is built from blackstone with chains.
Where ruined portals generate
Ruined portals generate in almost every Overworld biome and in every Nether biome; they are the only structure in more than one dimension. In the Overworld they can be on the surface, underground, on the ocean floor, half-buried in deserts or inside mountains. In the Nether they generate between Y 27 and Y 100.
This is how the ruined portals in our test areas split between biomes in the Overworld:
| Biome | Share of ruined portals |
|---|---|
| Forest | 11.4% |
| Plains | 9.6% |
| Ocean | 7.6% |
| Savanna | 5.5% |
| River | 5.5% |
| Lukewarm ocean | 5.3% |
| Desert | 4.1% |
| Deep lukewarm ocean | 3.5% |
| All other biomes | 47.5% |
Measured with our engine on 10 test seeds, Java 1.21.1, in an area of 8,192 × 8,192 blocks around 0, 0 for each seed. Biome taken at the centre of each start chunk, at Y 64.
In the Nether, ruined portals split between biomes like this. Pick Nether under Dimension to see them on the map.
| Nether biome | Share of ruined portals |
|---|---|
| Nether wastes | 35.9% |
| Crimson forest | 23.6% |
| Soul sand valley | 17.2% |
| Basalt deltas | 15% |
| Warped forest | 8.3% |

How far apart ruined portals are
The game splits the Overworld into square regions of 40 × 40 chunks (640 × 640 blocks) and makes one attempt in each. Our test areas held about 164 regions each and between 158 and 163 ruined portals, so about 98% of regions got one.
| Measure | Closest seed | Median seed | Furthest seed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nearest to 0, 0 (blocks) | 25 | 286 | 446 |
| Number in 8,192 × 8,192 blocks | 163 | 162 | 158 |

The median is a typical seed. Yours can be much closer or further, which is why the finder lists results for your exact seed.
Tips for finding and exploring ruined portals
- A Nether portal needs at least 10 obsidian (a 4 × 5 frame without corners). Crying obsidian in the frame stops the portal from lighting.
- The chest can hold flint and steel or fire charges, so you can often light the portal on the spot.
- 5% of ruined portals are giant versions with more obsidian and gold.
How to use the coordinates in game
- Press F3 to see your own X and Z, then head towards the result’s X and Z. Ruined portals are at the surface in most cases, but some are underground or underwater.
- With cheats on, tap a marker or Copy and run
/tp @s X ~ Z; the~keeps your current height. - The coordinates are the north-west corner of the chunk the ruined portal starts in, the same chunk
/locate structure #minecraft:ruined_portalpoints to.
Set “Search near” to your base or the map centre to list ruined portals around a different spot. To see ruined portals next to every other structure type, use the structure finder.
How accurate the ruined portal finder is
We started a real Java 1.21.1 server for 10 test seeds. Our nearest ruined portal to 0, 0 matched the game’s /locate on 10 of 10 seeds, and the game confirmed 50 of the 50 ruined portals we listed. Other versions haven’t been checked against the game yet.
Bedrock Edition: Java only for now
On Bedrock, every ruined portal has a chest, and each obsidian block has a 20% chance to be crying obsidian (15% on Java). A Java map would point you to the wrong places, so the finder doesn’t show Bedrock results yet.
