What is a swamp hut?
A swamp hut, also called a witch hut, is a small wooden hut where a witch and a black cat spawn. Players look for one to build a witch farm. 4 things to look for inside:
- A cauldron (always empty on Java)
- A crafting table
- A flower pot with a red mushroom
- One witch and one black cat that spawn with the hut and never despawn
Watch out: Witches spawn with the hut and can keep spawning inside the hut’s area. The first witch doesn’t spawn on Peaceful.
Where swamp huts generate
Swamp huts generate rarely, above ground, in swamps. They don’t generate in mangrove swamps.

How far apart swamp huts are
The game splits the Overworld into square regions of 32 × 32 chunks (512 × 512 blocks) and makes one attempt in each. Our test areas held about 256 regions each and between 0 and 6 swamp huts, so about 1% of regions got one.

Tips for finding and exploring swamp huts
- Witches can keep spawning anywhere in the 7 × 7 × 9 area around the hut, from one level below the floor to two blocks above the roof. That is why swamp huts are used for witch farms.
- Skip mangrove swamps when searching: swamp huts never generate there.
- Swamp huts are rare, so use the finder rather than wandering a swamp.
How to use the coordinates in game
- Press F3 to see your own X and Z, then head towards the result’s X and Z. Swamp huts are on the surface.
- With cheats on, tap a marker or Copy and run
/tp @s X ~ Z; the~keeps your current height. - The coordinates are the north-west corner of the chunk the swamp hut starts in, the same chunk
/locate structure minecraft:swamp_hutpoints to.
Set “Search near” to your base or the map centre to list swamp huts around a different spot. To see swamp huts next to every other structure type, use the structure finder.
How accurate the swamp hut finder is
We started a real Java 1.21.1 server for 10 test seeds. Our nearest swamp hut to 0, 0 matched the game’s /locate on 10 of 10 seeds, and the game confirmed 12 of the 12 swamp huts we listed. Other versions haven’t been checked against the game yet.
Bedrock Edition: Java only for now
On Bedrock, the cauldron starts with 1 to 3 bottles of a random potion, and killed witches respawn on only one block of the hut floor. A Java map would point you to the wrong places, so the finder doesn’t show Bedrock results yet.
