Minecraft shipwreck finder
Enter your seed to list the shipwrecks nearest to you, with exact X and Z coordinates, for Java Edition 1.16.5 to 1.21.4.
Structures and search area
Bedrock Edition isn't supported yet
Bedrock places structures and slime chunks differently from Java, so we don't show Java results for a Bedrock world. Bedrock support is coming. Switch to Java to use the map.

What is a shipwreck?
A shipwreck is the wreck of a wooden sailing ship. It can hold up to three chests, including a map chest with a buried treasure map. 4 things to look for inside:
- A map chest (lower stern) that always holds a buried treasure map
- A treasure chest (upper stern) with iron, gold, emeralds and lapis lazuli
- A supply chest (bow) with food, paper, coal and leather armor
- Coast armor trim templates
Where shipwrecks generate
Shipwrecks are common in every ocean, on the seafloor. Less often they generate above sea level on beaches and snowy beaches. A ship can be upright, on its side or upside down, and is often missing parts.
This is how the shipwrecks in our test areas split between biomes:
| Biome | Share of shipwrecks |
|---|---|
| Ocean | 23% |
| Lukewarm ocean | 17.3% |
| Deep ocean | 10.5% |
| Cold ocean | 10.1% |
| Deep lukewarm ocean | 9.9% |
| Warm ocean | 9.5% |
| Deep cold ocean | 6.9% |
| Beach | 6.3% |
| All other biomes | 6.5% |
Measured with our engine on 10 test seeds, Java 1.21.1, in an area of 8,192 × 8,192 blocks around 0, 0 for each seed. Biome taken at the centre of each start chunk, at Y 64.
How far apart shipwrecks are
The game splits the Overworld into square regions of 24 × 24 chunks (384 × 384 blocks) and makes one attempt in each. Our test areas held about 455 regions each and between 94 and 177 shipwrecks, so about 34% of regions got one.
| Measure | Closest seed | Median seed | Furthest seed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nearest to 0, 0 (blocks) | 126 | 309 | 999 |
| Number in 8,192 × 8,192 blocks | 177 | 156 | 94 |
Engine results for the 10 test seeds, Java 1.21.1. Placement: 1 per 24 × 24 chunks.
The median is a typical seed. Yours can be much closer or further, which is why the finder lists results for your exact seed.
Tips for finding and exploring shipwrecks
- A shipwreck with at least two chests always has its map chest. Follow the map to buried treasure, or use the buried treasure finder.
- Chests depend on which parts survived: supply in the bow, treasure and map in the stern.
- Shipwrecks that overlap other structures may have no chests at all.
How to use the coordinates in game
- Press F3 to see your own X and Z, then head towards the result’s X and Z. Shipwrecks are on the seafloor or a beach.
- With cheats on, tap a marker or Copy and run
/tp @s X ~ Z; the~keeps your current height. - The coordinates are the north-west corner of the chunk the shipwreck starts in, the same chunk
/locate structure #minecraft:shipwreckpoints to.
Set “Search near” to your base or the map centre to list shipwrecks around a different spot. To see shipwrecks next to every other structure type, use the structure finder.
How accurate the shipwreck finder is
We started a real Java 1.21.1 server for 10 test seeds. Our nearest shipwreck to 0, 0 matched the game’s /locate on 10 of 10 seeds, and the game confirmed 50 of the 50 shipwrecks we listed. Other versions haven’t been checked against the game yet.
Bedrock Edition: Java only for now
On Bedrock, shipwrecks can use acacia wood and can also generate on mushroom field shores. A Java map would point you to the wrong places, so the finder doesn’t show Bedrock results yet.
