What are ocean ruins?

Ocean ruins are crumbling stone or sandstone buildings under the sea, with loot chests and suspicious blocks you can brush for pottery sherds and sniffer eggs. 4 things to look for inside:

Watch out: Many ruins spawn with one to four drowned, which never despawn. Magma blocks are part of the ruins.

Where ocean ruins generate

Cold ruins (stone bricks) generate in ocean, cold ocean and frozen ocean, and their deep versions. Warm ruins (sandstone) generate in warm, lukewarm and deep lukewarm ocean. They sit on the seafloor, often partly buried.

How far apart ocean ruins are

The game splits the Overworld into square regions of 20 × 20 chunks (320 × 320 blocks) and makes one attempt in each. Our test areas held about 655 regions each and between 143 and 247 ocean ruins, so about 33% of regions got one.

Tips for finding and exploring ocean ruins

How to use the coordinates in game

  1. Press F3 to see your own X and Z, then head towards the result’s X and Z. Ocean ruins are on the seafloor.
  2. With cheats on, tap a marker or Copy and run /tp @s X ~ Z; the ~ keeps your current height.
  3. The coordinates are the north-west corner of the chunk the ocean ruins starts in, the same chunk /locate structure #minecraft:ocean_ruin points to.

Set “Search near” to your base or the map centre to list ocean ruins around a different spot. To see ocean ruins next to every other structure type, use the structure finder.

How accurate the ocean ruins finder is

We started a real Java 1.21.1 server for 10 test seeds. Our nearest result to 0, 0 matched the game’s /locate on 10 of 10 seeds, and the game confirmed 50 of the 50 ocean ruins we listed. Other versions haven’t been checked against the game yet.

Bedrock Edition: Java only for now

Bedrock uses its own structure placement, which we haven’t rebuilt yet. A Java map would point you to the wrong places, so the finder doesn’t show Bedrock results yet.
