Slime chunks in numbers

Measured with our engine on 10 test seeds, Java 1.21.1, in an area of 8,192 × 8,192 blocks around 0, 0 for each seed.

How slime chunks work

In Java Edition, the game combines the world seed with a chunk's X and Z to seed a random number generator, then draws a number from 0 to 9. If it's 0, the chunk is a slime chunk, so about 1 chunk in 10 is one. The result never changes for that seed, so a slime chunk stays a slime chunk forever. A chunk is 16 × 16 blocks; its coordinates are the block coordinates divided by 16 and rounded down, which is what the finder shows when you tap the map.

Slime chunks are the reliable option: they work at any time of night or day because light doesn't matter, as long as the spawning floor is below Y 40.

Choosing a spot for a slime farm

In Java Edition, mobs only spawn within 128 blocks of a player and hostile mobs vanish if they move further away than that. So what matters for a farm is how many slime chunks you can cover while standing in one place. Around a typical point there are about 22.5 slime chunks within 128 blocks, between 16 and 25 in our tests.

Counted around 0, 0 for each of the 10 test seeds; a chunk counts if its centre is within 128 blocks.

  1. Set "Search near" to where you want to build and check the list: it shows the 10 closest slime chunks.
  2. Zoom in until the chunk grid appears and look for slime chunks that touch. A 2 × 2 block of four is rare, about 1 per 10,000 chunks, so a pair or an L-shape is usually the best you'll find.
  3. Dig out the slime chunk below Y 40 and stand in the middle of your group of chunks.

How accurate the slime chunk finder is

For all 10 test seeds, we compared 16,384 chunks each against a separate copy of the game's own random number generator, written independently of the finder. All 163,840 matched. While testing we also found and fixed a bug that made a popular open-source slime chunk function give wrong answers more than 37 chunks from 0, 0.

Bedrock Edition: Java only for now

In Bedrock Edition, slime chunks don't depend on the seed: they're in the same places in every world. The Java map would be wrong for Bedrock, so the finder doesn't show Bedrock slime chunks yet.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find slime chunks?

Enter your Java seed above. The map highlights every slime chunk in green, and the list shows the 10 nearest to your “Search near” point.

How common are slime chunks?

About 1 chunk in 10. In our tests there were 22.5 slime chunks within 128 blocks of a typical point.

At what Y-level do slimes spawn in slime chunks?

Below Y 40, in any light level and any biome.

Do slime chunks change?

No. A chunk is a slime chunk or not for the life of the world, decided by the seed and its chunk coordinates.

Does it work on Bedrock?

Not yet. Bedrock decides slime chunks differently, so the finder only shows Java results.

How do I find my Minecraft seed?

In Java Edition, type /seed in chat. It works in single player even with cheats off; on a server you need operator rights.
